Shinya Yamamura Exhibition of altars - Sho Kishino's Gara Buddhist statues -
July 21st - July 30th, 2023
Exhibition view
My greatest desire when creating my work is for it to be beautiful, and my hope is that it will be accepted by people for a long time.
Lacquer is tree sap. I think about the mysterious beauty of natural lacquer and how to create a new worldview by fusing lacquer with other materials such as metal, shells, or eggshells, or how to leave a work of art as lacquer art of the present day by learning traditional techniques and designs. I create with these thoughts in mind every day, and I enjoy the pain of it all.
This time I tried making a small shrine.
Shinya Yamamura
It has been a long time since we last held an exhibition of Shinya Yamamura's work.
He says he learned more about design, taste and color from American Craft magazine than from traditional Japanese craft designs.
These small boxes, crafted from luminous shell and gold and silver leaf, are filled with his creativity and originality, and his spirit is apparent in every detail.
This time, Ippodo has only nine altar pieces.
The Buddha statue inside was commissioned to be made by sculptor Sho Kishino out of the fragrant wood, aloeswood.
My friend, Torike Ippei, selected the incense wood, and the result is an incredibly noble and fragrant shrine and Buddha statue.
