View from Mikuriya Cave during a report on Cape Muroto, the place where Kukai enlightened his mind
The single world of just the sky and sea gives rise to a variety of artistic inspirations.
Ken Matsubara
"Good morning, Ken-san." In his later years, Hayashiya Seizo's day would begin with a wake-up call to Matsubara Ken.
When Hayashiya gave him the theme of "Kukai," Matsubara immediately visited the Mikuni Cave at Cape Muroto in Kochi Prefecture and produced a magnificent painting of the sky, sea, sun, and moon that Kukai would have seen.
In October 2019, Ippodo New York will relaunch for the 13th year, opening its gallery on 67th Street in the Upper East Side with the unveiling of Matsubara Ken's masterpiece "Sun, Moon, Sky, Sea Map."
Visitors were enthralled by the Japanese spirit and culture.
Six months later, the coronavirus shock hit. As the world changed dramatically, Ginza Ippodo came up with a bold plan.
We would like to give Matsubara Ken a triumphant return and our thanks in Ginza.
I would love for you to experience the original Japanese landscape of Kukai's world.
