Born in Osaka in 1937.
After graduating from the Painting Department of Tokyo University of the Arts, he studied abroad in Italy.
During his six-year stay, he moved from two-dimensional to three-dimensional and even dynamic sculptures, and has since continued to create sculptures around the world that are powered by natural energies such as wind and water.
Visiting artist at the Harvard University Visual Arts Center from 1971 to 1972.
From June 2000 to December 2001, he planned and organized the "Wind Caravan," an event that involved installing sculptures in the natural landscapes of six locations around the world and encouraging interaction with people from each region. For this activity, he received the Special Award at the 43rd Mainichi Art Awards.
Received the Purple Ribbon Medal in 2002 and the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette in 2010.
The Shingu Susumu Wind Museum, which opened in the recreation zone of Hyogo Prefectural Arima Fuji Park in 2014, has a permanent exhibition of 13 wind-activated sculptures, and uses this space as a stage for outdoor performances twice a year.
From 2016 to 2017, he held the solo exhibition "Shingu Susumu's Spaceship" at the Nagasaki Prefectural Art Museum, Yokosuka Museum of Art, and Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art.
In 2018, he held the solo exhibition "Susumu Shingu - Spaceship" at the Luxembourg National Museum of Contemporary Art, and from 2019 to 2020, he held the solo exhibition "Shingu Susumu - Contemporary Utopia" at the Château de Chambord in France.
He is also known as a picture book author and has published stage works.
