Bamboo grows in subtropical Asia and is essential for food, clothing, and shelter.
Japanese bamboo baskets have elevated bamboo to the level of art and crafts.
Since its spectacular debut at the Paris World's Fair in 1926 (Taisho 15),
It remains immensely popular in the West to this day.
What kind of Japanese arts and crafts will be exhibited at the Kansai Expo in 2025?

Masamitsu Saito has been fascinated by bamboo baskets for 40 years.
Becoming one of the world's leading collectors
The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris
He is a valuable participant in bamboo basket projects both in Japan and overseas.
Bamboo baskets made by master craftsmen such as Iizuka Rokansai were gathered under him.
This time too, Mr. Saito's treasured bamboo baskets will be on display.

A collector of bamboo crafts.
While collecting bamboo craft works, he also promotes and coordinates bamboo craft exhibitions such as the Iizuka Rokansai and Lloyd Cotzen Collection Exhibitions, proposes bamboo craft works to art museums both in Japan and overseas, and gives advice to collectors. He is also involved in the planning of the "Bamboo Basket" edition of the NHK program "Bi no Tsubo" and many publications.
