It has been 27 years since I first encountered Yoko Semoto's tempera paintings.
The mysterious painting had a Renaissance feel to it. I wonder what era and country the artist was from...
In her youth, she studied in Paris to learn about Impressionism, where she was deeply impressed by decorative paintings, religious paintings, and icons. She continued to commute from Paris to Italy.
After returning to Japan, he studied tempera painting with Professor Yasuo Taguchi of Tokyo University of the Arts, and created his own unique gold tempera paintings while working with dyeing and weaving artists Samiro Yunoki and the late Toshio Arimoto.
Yoko Semoto's paintings are characterised by the luxurious frames she creates herself using natural colours such as the blue of lapis lazuli and the sepia of squid ink, and are covered with real gold leaf.
His solo exhibitions at Ippodo began at Zakurozaka Gallery, and now include exhibitions at Jiyu Gakuen Auditorium after his appearance on "Tetsuko's Room" and Ippodo New York, marking his 24th.
This time, I have selected 40 of my favorite works from the teacher's studio. They are beautiful paintings.
We pray for the good health and long life of Mr. Semoto, who is now 93 years old, and that he will continue to paint forever.
