Keiko Minoura's Kana: A Thousand Years of Change

July 12th - July 21st, 2024

One day, I came across a book of old calligraphy and discovered the profound depth of kana.
Sadly, the silent kana characters of the Heian period are gradually being forgotten, but I want to make them more visible in modern times and to arrange them beautifully so that they can be seen even a thousand years from now.
I want to devote my life to this, so I take up my brush every day.
The time when kana will truly be revived...

I was amazed by Kana's elegant beauty in the NHK Taiga drama "To You, the Shining One."
It has been a long time since Japanese calligraphers have been creating artistic characters, and when I saw Keiko Minoura's kana characters, I felt so happy, as if I had found something I had been searching for and waiting for from the bottom of my heart.
I finally found it, I thought.
She began practicing calligraphy at the age of three and was said to be the reincarnation of the master of calligraphy.
In this exhibition, she writes in kana on "Masu Shikishi," an ancient calligraphy piece from the Heian period that is said to be by Fujiwara no Yukinari, while being enveloped in light and wind.
I hope that you can feel the gracefulness of Japanese women, like Murasaki Shikibu and Sei Shonagon, from the kana characters on the washi paper in this exhibition.
