Hyoa Ikeda

Ikeda Hyoa

Born in Tokyo in 1951.
After graduating from Musashino Art University, he pursued a career in bamboo art.
Since 1988, he has held regular solo exhibitions at the Mitsukoshi Main Store in Nihonbashi.
In 1993, he took on the name of the third Hyoa.
While firmly grasping the fundamentals of the classics, he is also actively exploring new possibilities in bamboo art, and is also devoting his efforts to research on bamboo-related tea ceremony utensils and folklore.

He currently presides over the bamboo arts class "Chikuraku-kai" (founded in 1956 by the second generation Hyooa), and also serves as a traveling lecturer for the Tankokai, a lecturer at the Tanko Culture Class, a lecturer at the Mitsukoshi Culture Center, and a lecturer at the NHK Culture Center.
His major works include "The Bamboo Art of Tea Ceremony: Basket Vases and Bamboo Vases - Their Use and Beauty," "Modern Tea Scoops: Elegant Pastimes for Connoisseurs," and "Miscellaneous Tales about Baskets and Bamboo," as well as the handmade tea ceremony books "Tea Scoops and Common Tubes," "Bamboo Vases," and "Baskets for the Tea Ceremony" (all published by Tankosha), and "The Taste of Tea Ceremonies" (Sekai Bunka Publishing).
