Suifu Mori

Suifu Mori

Suifu Mori, doll maker of Kyoto. He studied under his father, Kodo, and for more than forty years as a carver of wooden dolls has devoted himself to carving hinoki dolls to this day. Having been born and raised in Kyoto, it was perhaps natural that he should inherit his father's work. Without entering any other field of craft, he has single-mindedly perfected his skill as a craftsman. His dolls represent a rare summit of technique that carries on tradition alone. The works are made of Kiso hinoki and colored with suihi pigments, as used in Nihonga. The Kyoto dolls of Suifu, born and raised in the capital, have elegant, refined features, and in the beauty of their finish one feels his sincerity.
