Takashi Tomooka

Born in Kyoto, Tomooka went to the bamboo groves from an early age with his father, a bamboo basket maker. He loved pictures from childhood and was drawn to "a two-dimensional world of realist painting in which one cannot tell picture from photograph." He copied Raphael and Leonardo, and in Kyoto saw a great many Nihonga, ink paintings and Buddhist sculptures.
In high school he worked at a florist, and as a university student he worked with gardeners, tending the plantings of temple gardens. Realist painting and plants: Tomooka, who had loved these two worlds, encountered photography in the design department at university.
Today, in Tokyo, he grows flowers himself and takes "photographs like paintings." These photographs are contemporary Nihonga painted with a digital camera, the Rinpa of today.
