Exhibition Information

Michela Cattai

He worked as an art director at the long-established glass brand "Venini" in Murano, Italy.
Currently active as an artist, Michela Cattai has gained a strong reputation in Europe and the United States.
This exhibition, entitled "Acqua della Vita - Water of Life," will feature a series of glass works in which the natural beauty of Murano Island in Venice is mysteriously reflected.
The Laguna series is inspired by the Venetian lagoon, and the series is inspired by plants from the natural world.
The exhibition will feature works that reveal her deep connection with nature.
Her glass works are artistic pieces that combine a painterly quality created by the arrangement of colors with a sculptural quality created by the opacity and distinctive curves.
The free color arrangement, calculated and created by the artist himself, expands the painterly element of glass,
The light contained within the opaque glass exudes a poetic, spiritual and mysterious quality.
The sculptural curves evoke the inherent beauty of nature and the sensual poetry of the work, inspiring viewers to engage with it deeply and be moved.
Michela Cattai does not seek simple beauty, but instead strives to reach the true essence of beauty by adhering to an "an-aesthetic" approach. This philosophy begins with an immersive approach in which the viewer is not taken into account when creating, and goes beyond visual "beauty."
Michela Cattai's glass works, created based on this concept of "non-aesthetic," encompass all these elements.
Her deep insights, the accumulation of time and respect in working with Murano artisans, her own experiences and philosophies.
Please come to the exhibition to see the works and spaces in which a refined spirituality that lies on a level beyond simple visual beauty is expressed through the stories of light and shadow in glass.

Artist's comment

I have always been fascinated by the material glass.
Its dual nature - fragile yet powerful,
I am attracted to it because of its ability to change when cooked, being transparent yet deep, and its ability to transform into a "living liquid" that can freely take on different shapes.
It is in this transformation that my creative expression emerges.
In a process shaped by emotion and technique, each piece comes to life as a unique sculpture.
My inspiration comes from the Venetian lagoon.
I am struck by the rainbow-colored reflections, the serenity of the plants, and the unsettling yet beautiful landscape that is reborn every day.
I believe in the idea of "sustainability" in the sense of respecting traditions and preserving the true value of craftsmanship.
It is a very meaningful moment for me to be able to return to this exhibition in Tokyo again.
I am currently represented by Ippodō Gallery, who have a deep understanding of my journey and are carefully conveying it to the people of Japan.
My presence here represents the meeting of two cultures with a deep sensitivity to the beauty that emerges from materials, the movement of the hand and silence.

Comment from Ippodo

Michela was born near Murano and grew up surrounded by glass.
The colors of the glass she creates are as soft as the seawater in Venice, and the shapes she creates give the impression of the movement of life in plants and animals in nature.
After working as art director for Venini, a top Italian glass manufacturer, he went independent.
He creates his work on the island of Murano, is based in Milan, and exhibits and works in Europe and America.
Rather than making products made by artisans with traditional techniques, Michela infuses her work with a reverence for nature and aesthetics.
As Japan enters the season of fresh greenery, a mysterious glass that embodies Italian culture has arrived at Ippodo.
