Terumasa Ikeda Exhibition "Raden"

Exhibition period: Friday, September 5, 2025 - Sunday, September 21, 2025

Venue: Ginza Ippodo

We are pleased to announce that we will be holding a solo exhibition by lacquerware artist Terumasa Ikeda, who is affiliated with Ippodo Gallery.
A new work by Terumasa Ikeda will be exhibited at Ginza Ippodo, expressing a beauty that transcends time and space, where traditions inherited from the past are expressed by modern people and connected to the future.

Artist's comment

I am overwhelmed by the decorations created by people long ago, as I come into contact with them now.
I wondered if I could create that kind of "timeless beauty" myself.

Terumasa Ikeda

Comment from Ippodo

Ikeda has been interested in the decorative technique of raden, which dates back to the Nara period and involves attaching the mother-of-pearl layer of abalone and other shells to lacquerware.
He is known for his innovative work that incorporates modern scientific technologies such as laser processing and ultrasonic vibration.
The most distinctive item is the one with the numbers design.

Instead of the traditional design of flowers, birds, wind and moon,
The symbol "numbers" that everyone in the world can understand
Its use in mother-of-pearl inlay is new.

Furthermore, integrated circuits and pixels are cut into tiny pieces of shell and embedded in them.
He has established a unique style of expression where "digital and natural" and "organic and inorganic" intersect.

This exhibition will introduce the latest works that make full use of micro-raden techniques that took seven years to develop.
